Dubai Police Force Taps OTSAW for Drone Cop Cars

June 28, 2017

Singapore start-up OTSAW Digital has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Dubai Police Force to deploy autonomous outdoor security robot, O-R3, by the end of 2017 as part of the Smart Dubai initiative.

This makes Dubai the first city in the world to have O-R3 in operation.

The world’s first autonomous security robot with an aerial and ground collaborative surveillance system, O-R3 performs 360 degree surveillance and deters potential crime with its formidable presence on site. With self-charging capability, patrol and protection is provided 24/7, all year round.

But that does not mean the robots will replace humans, but instead fulfil low-level order enforcement tasks.

Ling, CEO of OTSAW Digital, on the role of robots said, “Ultimately, robots exist to improve the quality of human lives, where men take on high value jobs while robots perform the low skilled ones,”

O-R3 will be deployed on a robot as a service model, for public security and surveillance in Dubai’s commercial spaces.

Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander in Chief of the Dubai Police Force, on its stance to deploy O-R3 noted that, “We seek to augment operations with the help of technology such as robots. Essentially, we aim for streets to be safe and peaceful even without heavy police patrol”

With the O-R3 policing the streets of Dubai by end 2017, this marks a leap on Dubai’s ambitious plan for robots to make up 25 percent of its police force by 2030.

Nael Islam, IE Singapore’s Regional Director for the Middle East & North Africa concluded, “OTSAW’s collaboration with the Dubai Police is a good example of how Singapore companies can provide innovative and forward thinking solutions in the growing Middle East and North African markets. Success here will give them access to a much larger and varied marketplace”
