Reid Statement On March Unemployment Rate

Nevada Senator Harry Reid issued the following statement after Nevada’s unemployment rate dropped to 12 percent in March:

“The decline in Nevada’s unemployment rate is encouraging. Our economy is slowly recovering, but too many Nevadans remain out of work, which is why we must remain focused on creating jobs.

Earlier this month I met with Nevada business leaders to discuss ways to increase domestic and international tourism. Our state is known for world class entertainment, and we can create jobs by making it easier for visitors to travel to Nevada. We must also strengthen our infrastructure by passing by a Highway Bill. Right now, we have a bill before Congress that will allow funding for the crucial interstate between Las Vegas and Phoenix, connecting two of the largest cities in the Southwest and bringing more travelers to Nevada. Unfortunately, Republicans have chosen to ignore this important transportation jobs bill, which will also support 12,800 Nevada jobs.

This transportation jobs bill shouldn’t be a fight. Unfortunately Republicans have chosen to accommodate the Tea Party’s extreme demands instead of passing this bipartisan bill. I will continue to work with my colleagues on common-sense measures that will grow our economy and help middle-class families and I urge Republicans to put politics aside to work with us so Nevadans can get back to work.”
