Nancy Pelosi: STOCK Act
Restores Trust in Government
February 5, 2012
Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today
after the passage of the STOCK Act in the U.S. Senate:
“Passage of the STOCK Act in the Senate marks progress in restoring
trust in government and reforming Washington. Members of Congress,
executive branch officials, and judicial officers must play by the same
rules as everyone else; it would be a betrayal of the public trust to
personally profit from privileged information.
“Led by Congressman Tim Walz and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, the
STOCK Act has the support of a bipartisan majority of 280 Members. A
discharge petition filed in the House only yesterday already has the
bipartisan support of 168 Members.
“In his State of the Union address, President Obama called on Congress
to send the STOCK Act to his desk and said that he would sign it into
law right away. Now that the Senate has acted, and Congressman Walz and
Congresswoman Slaughter have demonstrated the overwhelming bipartisan
support of nearly two-thirds of the House, it is heartening to see that
the House Republican leadership has now ended their obstruction of this
important legislation. We can now take this first step to make
government more accountable to the American people.”
