Kyoto University Loses 77TB of Research Data

January 4, 2022

Kyoto University lost 77 terabytes of research data due to a bad software update issued by HPE that unintentionally deleted backups.

Toshio Okabe, Director, Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies, Kyoto University said, "From 17:32 on December 14, 2021 to 12:43 on December 16, 2021, due to a defect in the program that backs up the storage of the super computer system ( manufactured by Japan Hulett Packard LLC ). An accident occurred in which some data of the capacity storage (/ LARGE0) was deleted unintentionally."

Range of influence of file loss

-Target file system: / LARGE0

-File deletion period: December 14, 2021 17:32-December 16, 2021 12:43

-Disappearance target file: December 3, 2021 17:32 or later, Files that were not updated

・ Lost file capacity: Approximately 77TB

・ Number of lost files: Approximately 34 million files

・ Number of affected groups: 14 groups (of which 4 groups cannot be restored by backup)

The backup log of the past that was originally unnecessary due to a problem in the careless modification of the program and its application procedure in the function repair of the backup program by Nippon Hulett-Packard GK, the supplier of the super computer system. The process of deleting files malfunctioned as the process of deleting files under the / LARGE0 directory.

In this case, the procedure was insufficiently considered in the work of updating the backup program developed and maintained by Hewlett-Packard Japan, the supplier of the system, by the engineer in charge of the company, resulting in unexpected operation.

As a result, the file was lost. It was discovered by an inquiry from the affected user, and the deletion process of the problem was stopped. Only the file loss due to the malfunction of the backup program, No other problems such as leakage to the outside have occurred.

The files that cannot be recovered due to the absence of backup were about 28 TByte capacity and about 25 million files. Since this value includes files that do not need to be restored, the actual situation of files that cannot be restored is about 8 TByte capacity, about 25 million files.
